Really interesting two part analysis of the audit conducted after the 2020 election in Windham, New Hampshire.
Based on preliminary reports published by the team of experts that New Hampshire engaged to examine an election discrepancy, it appears that a buildup of dust in the read heads of optical-scan voting machines (possibly over several years of use) can cause paper-fold lines in absentee ballots to be interpreted as votes… New Hampshire (and other states) may need to maintain the accuracy of their optical-scan voting machines by paying attention to three issues:
- Routine risk-limiting audits to detect inaccuracies if/when they occur.
- Clean the dust out of optical-scan read heads regularly; pay attention to the calibration of the optical-scan machines.
- Make sure that the machines that automatically fold absentee ballots (before mailing them to voters) don’t put the fold lines over vote-target ovals. (Same for election workers who fold ballots by hand.)

How to Prepare for Your Child’s First Smartphone
If only more things in life came with training wheels; a child’s first smartphone could certainly use some.
Like taking off the training wheels and riding out into the neighborhood for the first time, a smartphone opens an entirely new world for children. There are apps, social media, group chats with friends, TikTok stars, and the joy of simply being “in” with their classmates and friends through the shared experience of the internet.
For parents, the similarities between first bike rides and first phones continue. You love the growing independence that this moment brings, yet you also wonder what your child will encounter out there when you’re not around. The good and the bad. How have you prepared them for this? Are they really ready?
When is my child ready for a smartphone?
That’s the question, isn’t it—when is my child ready for that first smartphone?
For years, your child has dabbled on the internet, whether that was playing on your phone while they were little, letting them spend time on a tablet, or using a computer for school. Along the way, there have been teaching moments, little lessons you’ve imparted about staying safe, how to treat others online, and so forth. In other words, you’ve introduced the internet to your child in steps. Giving them their own phone is yet another step, but a big one.
Yet those teaching moments and little lessons are things that they’ll lean on when they’re on their own phone—whether those were about “stranger dangers” online, proper online etiquette, and the difference between safe and unsafe websites. Understanding if your child has a firm foundation for navigating all the highs and lows of the internet is a strong indication of their readiness. After all, safely entering the always-online world of having a smartphone demands a level of intellectual and emotional maturity.
Is there a right age for a first smartphone?
Good question. We do know that smartphone usage by children is on the rise. For example, research from Common Sense Media indicates that 53% of 11-year-olds have a smartphone, a number that jumps to 69% at age 12. That’s quite a bit of smartphone use by tweens, use which may be lightly monitored or not monitored at all. Why the rise, particularly in very young owners? However, does that mean 26% of nine-year-olds should have unfettered and all-day access to the internet in the palm of their hands? That’s a topic for you to decide for yourself and for the good of your family. However, if the notion of a third grader with a smartphone seems a little on the young side to you, there are alternatives to smartphones.
Smartphone alternatives for young children
If keeping in touch is the primary reason for considering a smartphone, you have internet-free options that you can consider:
- Flip phones: Often sturdy and low cost, these are great devices for keeping in touch without the added worry and care of internet access. Likewise, it’s a good way to help younger children learn to care for a device—because it may get dropped, kicked, wet, maybe even lost. You name it.
- Smart watches for kids: A quick internet search will turn up a range of wearables like these. Many include calling features, an SOS button, and location tracking. Do your research, though. Some models are more fully featured than others.
- First phones for kids: Designed to include just the basics, these limited-feature smartphones offer a great intermediary step toward full smartphone ownership. In the U.S., brands such as Pinwheel and Gabb may be worth a look if you find this route of interest.
In all, for a younger child, one of these options may be your best bet. They’ll help you and your child keep in touch, develop good habits, and simply learn the basic responsibilities and behaviors that come with using a device to communicate with others.
Preparing you and your family for the first smartphone
Now’s a perfect time to prepare yourself for the day when your child indeed gets that first proper smartphone. That entails a little research and a little conversation on your part. Topics such as cyberbullying, digital literacy, social media etiquette, and so on will be important to get an understanding on. And those are just the first few.
A good place to start is your circle of family and friends. There, you can find out how they handled smartphone ownership with their children. You’ll likely hear a range of strategies and approaches, along with a few stories too, all of which can prepare you and your child.

Time for the first smartphone
Having a smartphone will change not only their life, but yours as well. Relationships will evolve as your child navigates their new online life with their middle school and high school peers. (Remember those days? They weren’t always easy. Now throw smartphones into the mix.)
With that, give you and your child one last checkpoint. The following family talking points for owning a smartphone offer a solid framework for conversation and a way to assess if your child, and you, are truly ready for what’s ahead.
Once smartphone day arrives, it’s time to put two things in place—mobile security and parental controls:
- Get mobile security for your child’s Android phone or mobile security for iPhones. This will provide your child with basic protection, like system scans, along with further protection that steers your child clear of suspicious websites and links.
- Use parental controls for your child’s phone. I also suggest being open and honest with them about using these parental controls. In effect, it’s a tool that extends your parental rules to the internet, so be clear about what those rules are. A good set of controls will let you monitor their activity on their phone, limit their screen time, plus block apps and filter websites.
What’s next?
Plenty. And as a mom myself, I rely heavily on those parental controls I put into place, but I also stay close to what they are doing online. It’s a bit of a mix. I simply ask them what’s going on and do a little, monitoring too. That could be asking them what their favorite games and apps are right now or talking about what playlists they’re listening to. This keeps communication open and normalizes talking about the phone/ their internet usage and what’s happening on it. Communication like this can come in handy later on should they need your help with something that’s occurred online. By talking now, the both of you will have an established place to start.
In all, take children’s smartphone ownership in steps and prepare them for the day those training wheels come off so the both of you can fully enjoy that newfound independence of life with a smartphone.

How Does One Get Hired by a Top Cybercrime Gang?
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) last week announced the arrest of a 55-year-old Latvian woman who’s alleged to have worked as a programmer for Trickbot, a malware-as-a-service platform responsible for infecting millions of computers and seeding many of those systems with ransomware.
Just how did a self-employed web site designer and mother of two come to work for one of the world’s most rapacious cybercriminal groups and then leave such an obvious trail of clues indicating her involvement with the gang? This post explores answers to those questions, as well as some of the ways Trickbot and other organized cybercrime gangs gradually recruit, groom and trust new programmers.

The indictment released by the DOJ (PDF) is heavily redacted, and only one of the defendants is named: Alla “Max” Witte, a 55-year-old Latvian national who was arrested Feb. 6 in Miami, Fla.
The DOJ alleges Witte was responsible for “overseeing the creation of code related to the monitoring and tracking of authorized users of the Trickbot malware, the control and deployment of ransomware, obtaining payments from ransomware victims, and developing tools and protocols for the storage of credentials stolen and exfiltrated from victims infected by Trickbot.”
The indictment also says Witte provided code to the Trickbot Group for a web panel used to access victim data stored in a database. According to the government, that database contained a large number of credit card numbers and stolen credentials from the Trickbot botnet, as well as information about infected machines available as bots.
“Witte provided code to this repository that showed an infected computer or ‘bot’ status in different colors based on the colors of a traffic light and allowed other Trickbot Group members to know when their co-conspirators were working on a particular infected machine,” the indictment alleges.
While any law enforcement action against a crime group that has targeted hospitals, schools, public utilities and governments is good news, Witte’s indictment and arrest were probably inevitable: It is hard to think of an accused cybercriminal who has made more stunningly poor and rookie operational security mistakes than this Latvian senior citizen.
For starters, it appears at one point in 2020 Witte actually hosted Trickbot malware on a vanity website registered in her name — allawitte[.]nl.
While it is generally a bad idea for cybercriminals to mix their personal life with work, Witte’s social media accounts mention a close family member (perhaps her son or husband) had the first name “Max,” which allegedly was her hacker handle.
Unlike many accused cybercriminals who hail from Russia or former Soviet countries, Witte did not feel obligated to avoid traveling to areas where she might be within reach of U.S. law enforcement agencies. According to her indictment, Witte was living in the South American nation of Suriname and she was arrested in Miami while flying from Suriname. It is not clear where her intended destination was.

Alex Holden, founder of the cybersecurity intelligence firm Hold Security, said Witte’s greatest lapse in judgment came around Christmas time in 2019, when she infected one of her own computers with the Trickbot malware — allowing it to steal and log her data within the botnet interface.
“On top of the password re-use, the data shows a great insight into her professional and personal Internet usage,” Holden wrote in a blog post on Witte’s arrest.
“Many in the gang not only knew her gender but her name too,” Holden wrote. “Several group members had AllaWitte folders with data. They refer to Alla almost like they would address their mothers.”
So how did this hacker mom with apparently zero sense of self-preservation come to work for one of the world’s most predatory cybercriminal gangs?
The government’s indictment dedicates several pages to describing the hiring processes of the Trickbot group, which continuously scoured fee-based Russian and Belarussian-based job websites for resumes of programmers looking for work. Those who responded were asked to create various programs designed to test the applicant’s problem-solving and coding skills.
Here’s a snippet of translated instant message text between two of the unnamed Trickbot defendants, in which they discuss an applicant who understood immediately that he was being hired to help with cybercrime activity.

The following conversation, on or about June 1, 2016, concerned a potential new Trickbot hire who successfully completed a test task that involved altering a Firefox Web browser.

Other conversation snippets in the indictment suggest most new recruits understand that the projects and test tasks they are being asked to tackle are related to cybercrime activity.
“The majority understand that this is blackhat and asking for the commercial target,” wrote the defendant identified only as Co-Conspirator 8 (CC8).
But what about new hires that aren’t hip to exactly how the programs they’re being asked to create get used? Another source in the threat intelligence industry who has had access to the inner workings of Trickbot provided some additional context on how developers are onboarded into the group.
“There’s a two-step hiring process where at first you may not understand who you’re working for,” said the source. “But that timeframe is typically pretty short, like less than a year.”
After that, if the candidate is talented and industrious enough, someone in the Trickbot group will “read in” the new recruit — i.e. explain in plain terms how their work is being used.
“If you’re good, at some point they’re going to read you in and you’ll know, but if you’re not good or you’re not okay with that, they will triage that pretty quickly and your services will no longer be required,” the source said. “But if you make it past that first year, the chances that you still don’t know what you’re doing are very slim.”
According to the DOJ, Witte had access to Trickbot for roughly two years between 2018 and 2020.
Investigators say prior to launching Trickbot, some members of the conspiracy previously were responsible for disseminating Dyre, a particularly stealthy password stealer that looked for passwords used at various banks. The government says Trickbot members — including Witte — routinely used bank account passwords stolen by their malware to drain victim bank accounts and send the money to networks of money mules.
The hiring model adopted by Trickbot allows the gang to recruit a steady stream of talented developers cheaply and covertly. But it also introduces the very real risk that new recruits may offer investigators a way to infiltrate the group’s operations, and possibly even identify co-conspirators.
Ransomware attacks are nearly all perpetrated these days by ransomware affiliate groups which constantly recruit new members to account for attrition, competition from other ransomware groups, and for the odd affiliate who gets busted by law enforcement.
Under the ransomware affiliate model, a cybercriminal can earn up to 85 percent of the total ransom paid by a victim company he or she is responsible for compromising and bringing to the group. But from time to time, poor operational security by an affiliate exposes the gang’s entire operation.
On June 7, the DOJ announced it had clawed back $2.3 million worth of Bitcoin that Colonial Pipeline paid to ransomware extortionists last month. The funds had been sent to DarkSide, a ransomware-as-a-service syndicate that disbanded after a May 14 farewell message to affiliates saying its Internet servers and cryptocurrency stash were seized by unknown law enforcement entities.
“The proceeds of the victim’s ransom payment…had been transferred to a specific address, for which the FBI has the ‘private key,’ or the rough equivalent of a password needed to access assets accessible from the specific Bitcoin address,” the DOJ explained, somewhat cryptically.
Multiple security experts quickly zeroed in on how investigators were able to retrieve the funds, which did not represent the total amount Colonial paid (~$4.4 million): The amount seized was roughly what a top DarkSide affiliate would have earned for scoring the initial malware infection that precipitated the ransomware incident.

A data breach at a Volkswagen vendor has impacted millions of customers and prospective car purchasers across North America.
The breach occurred after information gathered by the vendor between 2014 and 2019 for sales and marketing purposes was stored electronically in an unsecured file for years.
The majority of the individuals whose data was compromised were potential buyers or current customers of luxury car brand Audi. The Volkswagen Group formed Audi in 1969 after it bought the Auto Union from rival Daimler-Benz.
On June 11, the American arm of the Volkswagen Group revealed that an unauthorized third party had obtained small amounts of personal data belonging to customers and prospects from a digital sales and marketing company used by its Audi Volkswagen brands. VW dealers based in Canada and the United States also used the services of the vendor.
VW identified the source of the incident in May this year but believes that the data could have been illegally accessed at any point between August 2019 and May 2021.
Information exposed in the security incident included phone numbers and email addresses, and in some cases details of vehicle leasing, purchases, and purchase inquiries.
Volkswagen said it will offer free credit protection services to the 90,000 Audi customers and interested potential buyers or leasers whose sensitive data was accessed in the data breach. Included in the sensitive data was driver license numbers, Social Security numbers, account or loan numbers, tax identification numbers, and dates of birth.
In a letter sent to customers, VW said: “We take the safeguarding of your information very seriously. We have informed the appropriate authorities, including law enforcement and regulators.
“We are working with external cybersecurity experts to assess and respond to this situation and have taken steps to address the matter with the vendor.”
The automaker warned those impacted by the breach to be on the lookout for phishing emails.
Automotive News reported that Audi of America president Daniel Weissland identified the vendor as Shift Digital, of Birmingham, Michigan, in an email sent Thursday. The news source claims that the vendor’s identity has been verified by “two dealers with knowledge of the situation.”

Ransomware group REvil has claimed responsibility for a recent cyber-attack on a multinational renewable energy company based in the United States.
Invenergy LLC, which is headquartered in Chicago, launched an investigation after unauthorized activity was detected on some of its systems.
In a statement issued on Friday, the company said: “At no time were Invenergy’s operations impacted and no data was encrypted.”
Invenergy added that it was complying with data breach disclosure regulations and that it “has not paid and does not intend to pay any ransom.”
Ransomware group REvil declared on its dark web site that it had carried out the cyber-attack on Invenergy. The gang claims to have compromised the company’s computer systems and exfiltrated 4 terabytes of data.
Among the information allegedly taken by REvil are contracts and project data. The gang further claims to have obtained “very personal and spicy” information regarding Invenergy’s chief executive officer, Michael Polsky.
REvil says it has accessed Polsky’s personal emails, sensitive details about his divorce from his first wife, Maya, and photographs in which the billionaire magnate is compromised.
Polsky emigrated from Soviet Ukraine to the United States in 1976 after building up a fortune of $1.5bn, according to Forbes. His divorce in 2007 was reported as one of the most expensive in history after a judge awarded Maya half of Polsky’s cash and assets.
REvil’s victims include meat-processing company JBS and the Taiwanese Apple supplier Quanta.
The cyber-criminal gang has also claimed responsibility for a recent cyber-attack on Sol Oriens, a 50-person firm based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which consults for the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Safety Administration.
The firm confirmed to CNBC that it detected a “cybersecurity incident” in May. Sol Oriens said that the matter is still under investigation and has been reported to law enforcement.
In a statement, the company said that “an unauthorized individual acquired certain documents from our systems. Those documents are currently under review, and we are working with a third-party technological forensic firm to determine the scope of potential data that may have been involved.”

Biden Opposes Conditional Handover of Cyber-criminals

The possibility of a deal allowing for the conditional handover of cyber-criminals between the United States and Russia has been extinguished by American president Joseph Biden.
Russian president Vladimir Putin said on June 13 that he would be willing to make an arrangement with the United States whereby the two countries would exchange cyber-criminals in accordance with agreed-upon conditions.
Putin, who is due to meet with Biden at a bilateral summit in Geneva on June 16, voiced the comments during an interview broadcast on state television.
Putin said he thought issues such as the environment, strategic stability, and Libya and Syria were of great importance to both Russia and America, and that he believed a bilateral dialogue would be established at Wednesday’s meeting.
Biden is expected to raise at the summit the issue of recent ransomware attacks on businesses based in the United States, including meat supplier JBS and the Colonial Pipeline, that the US says stemmed from Russia.
US officials have alleged that the Russian government, though not directly responsible for carrying out such attacks, habitually turns a blind eye to cyber-criminals operating inside Russia who attack foreign targets.
Asked if Russia would enter into an agreement to locate and prosecute cyber-criminals, Putin said Russia’s actions were dependent on Washington and Moscow’s reaching a formal and mutual deal.
“If we agree to extradite criminals, then of course Russia will do that,” said Putin. “We will do that, but only if the other side, in this case the United States, agrees to the same and will extradite the criminals in question to the Russian Federation.”
He added: “The question of cybersecurity is one of the most important at the moment because turning all kinds of systems off can lead to really difficult consequences.”
When asked about Putin’s proposal Biden said: “I’m open to it if there’s crimes committed against Russia that, in fact, are . . . [where] the people committing those crimes are being harbored in the US. I’m committed to holding them accountable.”
United States national security advisor Jake Sullivan later stated that Biden would pledge only to hold accountable American hackers who undertake illegal cyber-attacks internationally.
