Global Credential Stuffing Attempts Hit 193 Billion in 2020

There were 193 billion credential stuffing attempts during 2020 as cyber-criminals looked to capitalize on surging numbers of online users, according to Akamai.

The security vendor’s latest 2021 State of the Internet / Security report revealed the sheer scale of attempts to crack open users’ accounts using previously breached credentials.

Focusing mainly on the financial sector, the report claimed that Akamai detected 3.4 billion credential stuffing attempts targeting the vertical — a 45% increase on the previous year.

Akamai also detected nearly 6.3 billion web application attacks in 2020, over 736 million of which were aimed at financial services organizations — an increase of 62% from 2019.

In the financial services industry, Local File Inclusion (LFI) attacks were the number one web application attack type in 2020, accounting for 52% of the total, followed by SQLi (33%) and cross-site scripting (9%).

However, globally across all sectors, SQLi was in top spot — accounting for 68% of all web application attacks in 2020 — while LFI attacks came second with 22%.

“The ongoing, significant growth in credential stuffing attacks has a direct relationship to the state of phishing in the financial services industry,” said Steve Ragan, Akamai security researcher and report author.

“Criminals use a variety of methods to augment their credential collections, and phishing is one of the key tools in their arsenal. By targeting banking customers and employees in the sector, criminals increase their pool of potential victims exponentially.”

The report detailed the rise of smishing and phishing attacks against the financial services sector, specifically via two popular toolkits: Kr3pto and Ex-Robotos.

Akamai said threat intelligence company WMC Global detected smishing campaigns launched via Kr3pto which spoofed 11 brands in the UK, across more than 8000 domains since May 2020.

In total, the firm tracked over 4000 campaigns linked to Kr3pto targeting victims via SMS messaging over 31 days in Q1 2021.

“It’s important to remember that employees are consumers too, and with the prevalence of work from home, as well as mobile device usage in corporate environments, criminals are not shy about attacking people no matter where they are, which explains the recent growth in SMS-based phishing attacks,” argued WMC Global senior threat hunter, Jake Sloane.

Cloud Misconfiguration Exposes 100M+ Android Users

Misconfiguration of back-end cloud services by more than 20 mobile app developers may have exposed the personal data of over 100 million Android users, according to researchers.

A team at Check Point investigated 23 Android applications in a new piece of research, and found users’ emails, chat messages, location, passwords and photos all exposed by poor security practices.

There were three main issues. First, misconfiguration of the real-time databases that developers use to store data in the cloud and synchronize it with every client instantaneously.

In 13 of the apps studied, no authentication was deployed, enabling would-be attackers to access highly sensitive user data such as email addresses, passwords and private chats.

The second security snafu regarded push notification manager services.

“Most push notification services require a key (sometimes, more than one) to recognize the identity of the request submitter,” Check Point explained. “When those keys are just embedded into the application file itself, it is very easy for hackers to take control and gain the ability to send notifications which might contain malicious links or content to all users on behalf of the developer.”

The third issue was with cloud storage: again the researchers were able to find cases where developers had stored keys in the app file itself, enabling attackers to access sensitive user information.

Check Point said some, but not all, of the developers it contacted prior to publication had changed their configurations to mitigate the highlighted issues.

“This is the perfect storm of three issues — cloud misconfigurations, cloud credential leaks, and overly permissive mobile apps collecting more personal information than needed. Mobile apps usually rely on public cloud-based backend services like databases, analytics, and storage which are prime candidates for misconfiguration,” argued Saumitra Das, CTO of Blue Hexagon.

“Additionally, they release their code openly on app stores making it easier for folks to reverse engineer the inner workings. It is a common mistake to leave cloud access keys in code repositories and apps. Simple encodings like base64 are not enough to obscure the access keys which can allow anyone to then get access to customer PII being collected by the app in the cloud.”

Double-Encrypting Ransomware

This seems to be a new tactic:

Emsisoft has identified two distinct tactics. In the first, hackers encrypt data with ransomware A and then re-encrypt that data with ransomware B. The other path involves what Emsisoft calls a “side-by-side encryption” attack, in which attacks encrypt some of an organization’s systems with ransomware A and others with ransomware B. In that case, data is only encrypted once, but a victim would need both decryption keys to unlock everything. The researchers also note that in this side-by-side scenario, attackers take steps to make the two distinct strains of ransomware look as similar as possible, so it’s more difficult for incident responders to sort out what’s going on.

When we think of tipping, many don’t see it as anything beyond a display of gratitudeHowever, Twitter’s latest feature is prompting its users to rethink this sentiment. It hasn’t been long since Twitter released their new Tip Jar feature, which allows users on the platform to send tips to designated accounts. However, online users and security experts are already exposing the vulnerabilities in its architecture. 

Twitter’s Tip Jar has sparked concerns over user privacy due to the exposure of user’s shipping address, not to mention concerns over fraudulent payment disputes. Here’s what you need to know about this feature and what it means for your financial and data privacy.  

When Social Media Sharing Crosses a Line 

It was recently revealed that the new  feature may not be as secure as it was believed to be. Users were quick to point out a critical flaw that reveals their shipping address to the recipient when sending money through PayPalShortly after, others also discovered that Twitter Tip Jar could reveal a user’s email address even if no transaction took place. Only a limited number of accounts can receive payments, including creators, journalists, experts, and nonprofits. However, anyone can send tips, making the new feature’s vulnerabilities more concerning.  

The reason why PayPal displays the senders shipping address is because Twitter categorizetipping as a payment transactionTherefore, recipients would receive the sender’s payment and shipping details by default, just like any other vendor would in a typical online transaction.  

While your information inot shared publicly, exposing it to recipients poses increased security risks.  

Picture this: Hackers recognize notable recipients and hack their accounts to steal their information—including your personal address. They then use your information to carry out targeted phishing attacks and ransomware. You lose your data, your device becomes infected and therefore unusable, and you’re even more susceptible to identity fraudall stemming from an attempt to leave a digital tip as a token of goodwill 

Good Intentions Turned Bad 

Twitter Tip Jar is a prime example of a good idea gone awry. Twitter released the feature to support notable members of their communitymany of whom prefer to use Twitter due to the level of anonymity that is allowed by the platform — it does not require your real name, which potentially leads to more anonymous interactions than other social media sites. For this reason, Twitter users are more vulnerable to privacy concerns when using the Tip Jar.  

In addition to privacy concerns, hackers could also misuse the Tip Jar feature through fraudulent payment disputes. If someone tips a Twitter user using the Tip Jar and later files a “dispute” regarding the payment, PayPal requires the recipient pay a $20 dispute charge. Now imagine if a malicious entity does this to a recipient multiple times. The user could quickly accumulate hundreds of dollars in dispute charges instead of tips, causing the direction of money flow to effectively be reversed and financial stress on the recipient.  

Safely Navigate the Social Landscape 

It can be challenging to safely navigate social media from a cybersecurity perspective because sharing is now synonymous with social networking. If you actively participate on social platforms, here are the three tips you should follow to side-step any security gotchas along the way: 

1. Share your gratitude, not your information 

Fortunately, there’s a simple workaround to avoid publicly sharing your shipping address while using the Twitter Tip Jar. When sending a tip using Tip Jar, rather than inputting an address under the shipping address form field, simply defer to the “No address needed” option to keep your address private.  

2. Update your privacy settings 

Double check your privacy settings in both your social apps and your connected third-party payment systems. As you navigate this new feature and any that are upandcoming, take note of the privacy policies that impact how your personal data is being used. (e.g. Twitter has updated its tipping prompt and Help Center to make it clear that other apps, such as PayPal, may share information between people sending and receiving tips) 

3. Turn on automatic software updates 

Security researchers and engineers are constantly working to fix software bugs and vulnerabilities in the background. By turning on automatic updates, you are guaranteed to have all the latest security patches and enhancements for your apps and tools as soon as they become available.   

Practice Caution When Faced With New Features  

It can be tempting to jump on the bandwagon when a shiny, new feature makes its way to the social media platforms you use and love. But taking the time to learn about these features before choosing to participate can save you from a potential privacy headache, especially in the case of the Twitter Tip Jar. By educating yourself on both the benefits and the risks, you’ll be able to take actionable steps that protect your personal information.

How to Tell a Job Offer from an ID Theft Trap

One of the oldest scams around — the fake job interview that seeks only to harvest your personal and financial data — is on the rise, the FBI warns. Here’s the story of a recent LinkedIn impersonation scam that led to more than 100 people getting duped, and one almost-victim who decided the job offer was too-good-to-be-true.

Last week, someone began began posting classified notices on LinkedIn for different design consulting jobs at Geosyntec Consultants, an environmental engineering firm based in the Washington, D.C. area. Those who responded were told their application for employment was being reviewed and that they should email Troy Gwin — Geosyntec’s senior recruiter — immediately to arrange a screening interview.

Gwin contacted KrebsOnSecurity after hearing from job seekers trying to verify the ad, which urged respondents to email Gwin at a Gmail address that was not his. Gwin said LinkedIn told him roughly 100 people applied before the phony ads were removed for abusing the company’s terms of service.

“The endgame was to offer a job based on successful completion of background check which obviously requires entering personal information,” Gwin said. “Almost 100 people applied. I feel horrible about this. These people were really excited about this ‘opportunity’.”

Erica Siegel was particularly excited about the possibility of working in a creative director role she interviewed for at the fake Geosyntec. Siegel said her specialty —  “consulting with start ups and small businesses to create sustainable fashion, home and accessories brands” — has been in low demand throughout the pandemic, so she’s applied to dozens of jobs and freelance gigs over the past few months.

On Monday, someone claiming to work with Gwin contacted Siegel and asked her to set up an online interview with Geosyntec. Siegel said the “recruiter” sent her a list of screening questions that all seemed relevant to the position being advertised.

Siegel said that within about an hour of submitting her answers, she received a reply saying the company’s board had unanimously approved her as a new hire, with an incredibly generous salary considering she had to do next to no work to get a job she could do from home.

Worried that her potential new dream job might be too-good-to-be-true, she sent the recruiter a list of her own questions that she had about the role and its position within the company.

But the recruiter completely ignored Siegel’s follow-up questions, instead sending a reply that urged her to get in touch with a contact in human resources to immediately begin the process of formalizing her employment. Which of course involves handing over one’s personal (driver’s license info) and financial details for direct deposit.

Multiple things about this job offer didn’t smell right to Siegel.

“I usually have six or seven interviews before getting a job,” Siegel said. “Hardly ever in my lifetime have I seen a role that flexible, completely remote and paid the kind of money I would ask for. You never get all three of those things.”

So she called her dad, an environmental attorney who happens to know and have worked with people at the real Geosyntec Consultants. Then she got in touch with the real Troy Gwin, who confirmed her suspicions that the whole thing was a scam.

“Even after the real Troy said they’d gotten these [LinkedIn] ads shut down, this guy was still emailing me asking for my HR information,” Siegel said. “So my dad said, ‘Troll him back, and tell him you want a signing bonus via money order.’ I was like, okay, what’s the worst that could happen? I never heard from him again.”

HOW TO SPOT A JOB SCAM

In late April, the FBI warned that technology is making these scams easier and more lucrative for fraudsters, who are particularly fond of impersonating recruiters.

“Fake Job or Employment Scams occur when criminal actors deceive victims into believing they have a job or a potential job,” the FBI warned. “Criminals leverage their position as “employers” to persuade victims to provide them with personally identifiable information (PII), become unwitting money mules, or to send them money.”

Last year, some 16,012 people reported being victims of employment scams with losses totaling more than $59 million, according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). But the real losses each year from employment scams are likely far higher; as the Justice Department often points out, relatively few victims of these crimes report the matter to the IC3.

LinkedIn said its platform uses automated and manual defenses to detect and address fake accounts or fraudulent payments.

“Any accounts or job posts that violate our policies are blocked from the site,” LinkedIn said in response to a request for comment. “The majority of fake job postings are stopped before going live on our site, and for those job postings that aren’t, whenever we find fake posts, we work to remove it quickly.”

LinkedIn’s most recent transparency report says these automated defenses block or automatically remove 98.4% of the fake accounts. But the scam that ensnared Gwin and Siegel is more of a hybrid, in that the majority of it operates outside of LinkedIn’s control via email services like Gmail and Yahoo.

This, by the way, should be a major red flag for anyone searching for a job, says the FBI: “Potential employers contact victims through non-company email domains and teleconference applications.”

Here are some other telltale signs of a job scam, as per the FBI:

-Interviews are not conducted in-person or through a secure video call.
-Potential employers contact victims through non-company email domains and teleconference applications.
-Potential employers require employees to purchase start-up equipment from the company.
-Potential employers require employees to pay upfront for background investigations or screenings.
-Potential employers request credit card information.
-Potential employers send an employment contract to physically sign asking for PII.
-Job postings appear on job boards, but not on the companies’ websites.
-Recruiters or managers do not have profiles on the job board, or the profiles do not seem to fit their roles.
