DNI’s Annual Threat Assessment
The office of the Director of National Intelligence released its “Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community.” Cybersecurity is covered on pages 20-21. Nothing surprising:
- Cyber threats from nation states and their surrogates will remain acute.
- States’ increasing use of cyber operations as a tool of national power, including increasing use by militaries around the world, raises the prospect of more destructive and disruptive cyber activity.
- Authoritarian and illiberal regimes around the world will increasingly exploit digital tools to surveil their citizens, control free expression, and censor and manipulate information to maintain control over their populations.
- During the last decade, state sponsored hackers have compromised software and IT service supply chains, helping them conduct operations — espionage, sabotage, and potentially prepositioning for warfighting.
The supply chain line is new; I hope the government is paying attention.

Why Coin Miners Go Bad & How to Protect Your Tech When They Do
Cryptocurrency enthusiasts are flocking to the Wild West of Bitcoin and Monero to cash in on the recent gold rush. Bitcoin’s meteoric rise in value is making coin mining an appealing hobby or even a whole new career. Coin mining software is the main tool in a prospector’s belt.
Some coin miners, also known as cryptocurrency miners, are tempted by the dark side of the industry and resort to nefarious means to harness the immense computing power needed for cryptocurrency profits. Greedy cryptocurrency criminals employ a practice called cryptojacking, stealing the computer power of unsuspecting devices to help them mine faster. Your device could be at risk at being recruited to their efforts.
Let’s dig into how coin mining programs work, why they turn malicious, and how you can stay safe from cryptojackers.
How Coin Mining Works
Mining cryptocurrency takes a lot of time and computer processing power. A coin mining home setup requires a graphics processing unit (GPU) or an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). Coin mining software then runs off the GPU or ASIC. Each central processing unit (CPU), or the brain of the computer, plus the GPU or ASIC is referred to as a mining rig.
Once the software is installed, the rig is ready to mine, running mathematical calculations to verify and collect new cryptocurrency transactions. Each calculation is known as a hash, and hash rates are the number of calculations that can be run per second.
From there, casual miners may choose to join a mining pool, which is a club of miners who agree to consolidate their computing power and split the profits based on how much work each miner contributed to the output.
Bitcoin rewards miners every 10 minutes for their efforts. Each time miners solve a string of mathematical puzzles, they validate a chain of transactions, thus helping make the entire Bitcoin system more secure. Miners are paid in bitcoin and they also receive a transactional fee.
Why Coin Mining Turns Malicious
While coin mining typically starts off as a casual hobby, coin mining programs can turn malicious when cryptocurrency miners want to earn more without investing in boosting their own computing power. Instead, they reroute their targets’ computing power without asking. This is called cryptojacking.
Mining requires incredible amounts of electricity and the more rigs involved; the more cryptocurrency can be mined. Usually, the utility bills and the cost of running coin mining software negates any profit. For example, a casual miner may have one rig devoted to mining. An average rig processes approximately 500 hashes per second on the Monero network (a type of cryptocurrency). However, 500 hashes per second translates to less than a dollar per week in traditional, or fiat, currency.
Greedy cryptocurrency criminals recruit CPU soldiers to their mining army to improve their hash rate. To do so, criminals download coin mining software to a device and then program it to report back to their server. The device’s thinking power is diverted from the owner and funneled straight to the criminal’s server that now controls it. Compromised devices run considerably slower and can overheat, and the strain on the device can eventually destroy it.
How to Stay Safe from Cryptojacking
Cryptojackers are not your everyday thieves. Their target is your CPU power, and they employ devious methods to funnel it for their own use. Luckily, there are a few easy ways to thwart their efforts:
1. Beware of phishing
Personal devices are often infected through phishing within emails and texts. There are many tell-tale signs of a phishing message. For example, they are often poorly written and use language that indicates that the sender wants a hasty response. Also, phishing attempts often charade as official organizations, like banks and credit card companies. If you are ever suspicious of an email or text, do not open any of the links and do not reply. Instead, contact the organization’s customer support to verify the legitimacy of the message.
2. Use ad blockers
Another way miners gain access to personal devices is by camouflaging malicious code in pop-up ads. An easy way to avoid being cryptojacked is to simply never click on these ads. Or even better, install an ad blocker to help eliminate the risk.
3. Connect to a VPN
Public wi-fi and poorly protected networks present a vulnerable entry point for cybercriminals to hack into your devices. Cybercriminals often attempt to download software remotely to your laptop, desktop, or mobile device to reroute its computing power for their own selfish gains. Always connect to a VPN like McAfee Safe Connect VPN to safely surf unsecure networks.
4. Run antivirus software
Cryptojacking code is inconspicuous and generally hidden in legitimate code. Antivirus software, such as McAfee Total Protection, is a recommended way to proactively scan for malware and even identify fraudulent websites. McAfee WebAdvisor has a Chrome extension that specifically blocks cryptojackers.
5. Monitor your devices
Be aware of the signs your devices have been cryptojacked. For example, monitor any changes in the speed of your devices and check out your utility bills for dramatic spikes. By remaining vigilant with these tips, you will keep your devices safe from cryptocurrency miners gone rogue.

Cyber-bullied Teen Takes Own Life

A teenager from upstate New York has killed himself after experiencing cyber-bullying and online blackmail.
The family of 15-year-old Riley K. Basford say he was tricked into sharing “personal” images over social media by a scammer posing as Basford’s girlfriend.
After obtaining the sensitive images, the scammer threatened to share them online and send them to Basford’s family and friends unless the teen paid $3,500.
The teenager’s family say that Basford was “bombarded” with threats via Facebook before taking his own life in Potsdam, New York, on March 30.
“I start crying when I think of the four minutes of sheer panic and pain my baby felt to make that decision and that someone out in the world doesn’t even care that they did that to him,” Basford’s mother, Mary Rodee, told the Watertown Daily Times. “It’s so sick and I want everyone to know.”
Basford’s family said that the teenager’s last morning on Earth had been a typical one in which he fed the family’s cows, spent time with relatives, and paid a visit to his dentist.
But at midday, the teen began receiving threatening messages via social media. Within hours, he was dead.
“They continued to bombard him and bombard him, and finally they broke him,” said Riley’s father, Darren Basford. “He thought this was the only way out because he didn’t want to be embarrassed.”
Basford’s mother said her son had displayed no signs of mental illness before killing himself. She described his actions as the result of “a split second of madness in a young brain that couldn’t process the finality of the decision that he was making.”
She told WWNY-TV: “I want to figure out how this devil was able to prey on my child in such a short time.”
Basford’s father warned parents to closely monitor the use of social media by their children.
He said: “You need to talk to your kids about all social media, know who they’re talking to and have the kids know who they’re talking to.”
Riley Basford was a sophomore at Potsdam High School who was considering a future career in environmental conservation.

The global cybersecurity services market will be worth $192.7bn in seven years’ time, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc.
Researchers believe that the market size, valued at $91.15bn in 2020, will expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2% from 2021 to 2028.
Factors expected to drive the growth of the market size include the predicted continuance of cybersecurity breaches impacting enterprises and individuals and feeding the need to tackle vulnerabilities in networks, apps, and systems.
The proliferation of smartphones and the continued rollout of high-speed internet networks is also expected to boost the cybersecurity services market by triggering the adoption of mobile apps for everything from banking to health monitoring and socializing.
“All these applications have also emerged as potential targets for hackers, thereby prompting companies to opt for cybersecurity services to identify loopholes in the applications, plug the loopholes, and subsequently save users from potential losses,” noted researchers.
Other anticipated drivers of market growth flagged in the report include the need to meet various regulatory compliance acts and standards, such as HIPAA, FISMA, and PCI DSS.
Key predictions from the report are that the healthcare industry, which has lost $160m to ransomware attacks alone since 2016, will exhibit the highest CAGR of 11.4% over the forecast period.
“The increased instances of cyber-crimes in the recent past, and particularly during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, have prompted healthcare application developers to address the application vulnerabilities,” noted researchers.
They added: “Cyber-crimes targeting the healthcare industry are expected to intensify in line with the continued digitalization and the introduction of IoT-based medical devices.”
Asia Pacific is expected lead the way in regional growth as the fastest-growing area over the forecast period with a predicted CAGR of more than 16.3%.
Researchers wrote: “Asia Pacific is expected to offer numerous opportunities for adopting cyber security services, given the continued digitalization in India, Malaysia, Thailand, and Southeast Asian countries.”

Fitch Partners with SecurityScorecard to Help Investors Assess Businesses’ Cyber-Risk

SecurityScorecard has partnered with credit rating firm Fitch Ratings, in a move designed to provide investors with clearer insights into companies’ cybersecurity postures.
The announcement comes more than a year since the start of COVID-19 pandemic, a crisis which has led to many companies undergoing rapid digitization programs and shifting to remote working models. This has, in turn, widened the attack surface for cyber-criminals, making businesses more vulnerable to breaches.
In this landscape, cyber-risk is becoming an increasingly important consideration for investors when assessing a company’s credit risk, due to the potentially severe financial, reputational and regulatory implications of breaches.
While cyber-risk is already included in Fitch’s credit rating analysis, it will now be able to leverage SecurityScorecard’s “outside-in” scoring methodology to offer a more standardized and transparent way of assessing this area.
The partnership will initially focus on sectors where cyber-risk is particularly material, such as banks and other financial services, although there are plans to branch out into other industries in the future.
Kevin Duignan, global analytical head for Fitch Ratings, commented: “Through our collaboration with SecurityScorecard, Fitch looks to provide investors with additional insight into understanding and comparing cyber risk exposure across a broad set of institutions, beginning with banks.”
Aleksandr Yampolskiy, CEO and co-founder of SecurityScorecard said: “SecurityScorecard is thrilled to partner with Fitch Ratings to help investors of all sizes understand the true risk posture of organizations, so they can efficiently and effectively make smart investments.

Fitch has already analysed 484 global banks using SecurityScorecard’s scoring criteria, the results of which it has detailed in a separate report entitled Exploring Bank Cybersecurity Risk.

Cyber-Attack Shutters Half of Tasmania’s Casinos

Two of Tasmania’s four casinos have been forced to close their doors following a cyber-attack.
Threat actors struck the Australian island state’s sole casino operator Federal Group with ransomware on April 3. The attack affected hotel booking systems in the company’s Wrest Point and Country Club venues, sited in Sandy Bay and Launceston, respectively.
The venues’ slot machines, known as pokies in Tasmania, were also impacted and have been out of service since the attack.
Federal Group has launched an internal investigation into the attack and recruited third-party cybersecurity experts to help determine the extent of the security incident.
“As a result of hard work by our team and external experts, including over the Easter long weekend, the immediate incident itself has been contained,” said Federal Group executive director Daniel Hanna.
“The Australian Cyber Security Centre was notified and is coordinating with relevant law enforcement agencies and continued forensic analysis.”
Federal Group has not indicated when customers can expect normal services to resume.
ABC News said it had been informed by multiple former Federal Group IT employees that credit card details captured during historic transactions and stored in the company’s hotel booking system could have been exposed.
According to Hanna, the Group is still trying to work out whether any financial data or personal information belonging to customers was compromised in the attack.
Hanna told ABC that unions and other individuals passing comment on the incident “are not involved in the investigation or appraisal of all relevant information and cannot be relied on to provide accurate information.”
Details of the ransom demanded by the cyber-criminals have not been shared by the Federal Group, nor has the casino operator indicated whether it will be paying up to retrieve its encrypted data.
Former federal senator and Tasmanian minister Terry Aulich, who now works as a privacy and security consultant, said Tasmania enjoyed a false sense of cybersecurity.
“It’s a view we have in Tassie that somehow or other the awful things that go on overseas, whether it’s in IT or whatever, that it’s not going to happen here in dear little old Tassie. That’s entirely untrue.”
