Apple Adds a Backdoor to iMesssage and iCloud Storage

Apple’s announcement that it’s going to start scanning photos for child abuse material is a big deal. (Here are five news stories.) I have been following the details, and discussing it in several different email lists. I don’t have time right now to delve into the details, but wanted to post something.

EFF writes:

There are two main features that the company is planning to install in every Apple device. One is a scanning feature that will scan all photos as they get uploaded into iCloud Photos to see if they match a photo in the database of known child sexual abuse material (CSAM) maintained by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). The other feature scans all iMessage images sent or received by child accounts — that is, accounts designated as owned by a minor — for sexually explicit material, and if the child is young enough, notifies the parent when these images are sent or received. This feature can be turned on or off by parents.

This is pretty shocking coming from Apple, which is generally really good about privacy. It opens the door for all sorts of other surveillance, since now that the system is built it can be used for all sorts of other messages. And it breaks end-to-end encryption, despite Apple’s denials:

Does this break end-to-end encryption in Messages?

No. This doesn’t change the privacy assurances of Messages, and Apple never gains access to communications as a result of this feature. Any user of Messages, including those with with communication safety enabled, retains control over what is sent and to whom. If the feature is enabled for the child account, the device will evaluate images in Messages and present an intervention if the image is determined to be sexually explicit. For accounts of children age 12 and under, parents can set up parental notifications which will be sent if the child confirms and sends or views an image that has been determined to be sexually explicit. None of the communications, image evaluation, interventions, or notifications are available to Apple.

Notice Apple changing the definition of “end-to-end encryption.” No longer is the message a private communication between sender and receiver. A third party is alerted if the message meets a certain criteria.

Critical RDP Vulnerabilities Continue to Proliferate

This month’s Patch Tuesday brings us a relatively small number of CVEs being patched, but an abnormally high percentage of noteworthy critical vulnerabilities.

Vulnerability Analysis: CVE-2021-34535

One such vulnerability is identified as CVE-2021-34535, which is a remote code execution flaw in the Remote Desktop client software, observed in mstscax.dll, which is used by Microsoft’s built-in RDP client (mstsc.exe). The vulnerability is very closely related to a bug released in July of 2020, CVE-2020-1374, which also came through Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday process and had highly similar characteristics. The vulnerability is an integer overflow due to an attacker-controllable payload size field, which ultimately leads to a heap buffer overflow during memory allocation. The vulnerability can be triggered via the RDP Video Redirection Virtual Channel Extension feature [MS-RDPEV], which is typically deployed on port 3389, and is contained inside of compressed UDP payload and encrypted RDP using TLS.

But does this flaw, despite its impressive 9.9 CVSS score, rise to the level of past RDP vulnerabilities, including the infamous BlueKeep (CVE-2019-0708)? Not so fast – there are a few additional factors to take into consideration.

Attack Scenario

First and foremost, this is a client-side vulnerability, meaning there is no real ability for self-propagation, or “wormability” from an Internet perspective. The most likely attack scenario would be to convince a user to authenticate to a malicious RDP server, where the server could trigger the bug on the client side. During reproduction of the issue, we were able to easily trigger the crash and observe a later memcpy using the controlled overflow, which should facilitate exploitation. We think it is likely that exploits will be developed for this vulnerability but the availability of a patch prior to any known public exploitation helps to mitigate risks for organizations and individuals.

Secondly, thanks to the widespread proliferation and reach of BlueKeep and other related RDP vulnerabilities, a significant portion of RDP clients and servers have been disabled or moved from the network perimeter. This is less important given the client-side nature of the bug but does help with the overall attack surface.

In addition to Microsoft’s built-in RDP client (mstsc.exe), which is the more common Remote Desktop network connection, we have also confirmed that some lesser- known RDP vectors are affected by this vulnerability. Microsoft Hyper-V Manager “Enhanced Session Mode” and Microsoft Defender’s Application Guard (WDAG) both use RDP to screen share and present the secured browser respectively. This gives the end user a remote view of their isolated instance in the context of the host system. Rather than reimplementing the RDP session sharing capability, Microsoft ported the existing RDP client code base into Hyper-V and WDAG. Since the RDP client code is self-contained in mstscax.dll (an ActiveX COM object) it can simply be loaded into the Hyper-V (vmconnect.exe) and WDAG (hvsirdpclient.exe) processes to avail of the RDP client functionality. There does not appear to have been any attack surface reduction on this code base as the same DLL is loaded within all three processes mstsc.exe, vmconnect.exe and hvsirdpclient.exe. The impacted components are:

  • Microsoft’s built-in RDP client mstsc.exe uses the vulnerable mstscax.dll when a client remotely connects to an RDP server over the network. We have confirmed mstsc.exe crashes and the vulnerability can be triggered then the client has authenticated to an RDP server.

Mitigation: Patch

  • Microsoft’s Hyper-V Manager software also uses mstscax.dll where the vulnerable function resides. When using “Enhanced Session Mode” (enabled by default in Hyper-V Manager), the process vmconnect.exe loads mstscax.dll. We have confirmed through testing that triggering the vulnerability from inside a Hyper-V Windows 10 image will crash vmconnect.exe on the host. This means that it is subject to guest-to-host escapes using the vulnerability. (Hyper-V is disabled by Default on Windows 10).

Mitigation: Patch or disable “Enhanced Session Mode”

  • Microsoft Defender’s Application Guard also uses mstscax.dll to present the user with a view of their containerized Edge and IE browser. When a “New Application Guard window” is navigated from Edge it launches the process hvsirdpclient.exe which loads mstscax.dll. We have not confirmed the WDAG process hvsirdpclient.exe crashes but it does use the same code base so we recommend patching if using WDAG (WDAG is disabled by Default on Windows 10).

Looking Forward

The built-in RDP client and Hyper-V/WDAG clients communicate over different transport mediums in the form of TCP/IP and VMBus but they both use the same RDP client protocol implementation. Given that the flaw is contained within mstscax.dll, and is self-contained, the vulnerability was ported to these two implementations along with the rest of the code base.

While the urgency for patching remains somewhat lower than past critical vulnerabilities, threat actors will look to weaponize any of these low-hanging fruit that leverage common network protocols. Patching should be a top priority, and furthermore, a comprehensive and ongoing review of internet-facing and internal networked RDP clients and servers would be highly recommended. Eliminating or reducing the attack surface is one of the best counter attacks to vulnerability exploitation.

Microsoft have published a Knowledge Base article for the issue here with corresponding patch information. In the meantime, we are continuing to monitor this vulnerability closely; if exploitation is observed we may release additional content for customers.

Microsoft Patch Tuesday, August 2021 Edition

Microsoft today released software updates to plug at least 44 security vulnerabilities in its Windows operating systems and related products. The software giant warned that attackers already are pouncing on one of the flaws, which ironically enough involves an easy-to-exploit bug in the software component responsible for patching Windows 10 PCs and Windows Server 2019 machines.

Microsoft said attackers have seized upon CVE-2021-36948, which is a weakness in the Windows Update Medic service. Update Medic is a new service that lets users repair Windows Update components from a damaged state so that the device can continue to receive updates.

Redmond says while CVE-2021-36948 is being actively exploited, it is not aware of exploit code publicly available. The flaw is an “elevation of privilege” vulnerability that affects Windows 10 and Windows Server 2019, meaning it can be leveraged in combination with another vulnerability to let attackers run code of their choice as administrator on a vulnerable system.

“CVE-2021-36948 is a privilege escalation vulnerability – the cornerstone of modern intrusions as they allow attackers the level of access to do things like hide their tracks and create user accounts,” said Kevin Breen of Immersive Labs. “In the case of ransomware attacks, they have also been used to ensure maximum damage.”

According to Microsoft, critical flaws are those that can be exploited remotely by malware or malcontents to take complete control over a vulnerable Windows computer — and with little to no help from users. Top of the heap again this month: Microsoft also took another stab at fixing a broad class of weaknesses in its printing software.

Last month, the company rushed out an emergency update to patch “PrintNightmare” — a critical hole in its Windows Print Spooler software that was being attacked in the wild. Since then, a number of researchers have discovered holes in that patch, allowing them to circumvent its protections.

Today’s Patch Tuesday fixes another critical Print Spooler flaw (CVE-2021-36936), but it’s not clear if this bug is a variant of PrintNightmare or a unique vulnerability all on its own, said Dustin Childs at Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative.

“Microsoft does state low privileges are required, so that should put this in the non-wormable category, but you should still prioritize testing and deployment of this Critical-rated bug,” Childs said.

Microsoft said the Print Spooler patch it is pushing today should address all publicly documented security problems with the service.

“Today we are addressing this risk by changing the default Point and Print driver installation and update behavior to require administrator privileges,” Microsoft said in a blog post. “This change may impact Windows print clients in scenarios where non-elevated users were previously able to add or update printers. However, we strongly believe that the security risk justifies the change. This change will take effect with the installation of the security updates released on August 10, 2021 for all versions of Windows, and is documented as CVE-2021-34481.

August brings yet another critical patch (CVE-2021-34535) for the Windows Remote Desktop service, and this time the flaw is in the Remote Desktop client instead of the server.

CVE-2021-26424 — a scary, critical bug in the Windows TCP/IP component — earned a CVSS score of 9.9 (10 is the worst), and is present in Windows 7 through Windows 10, and Windows Server 2008 through 2019 (Windows 7 is no longer being supported with security updates).

Microsoft said it was not aware of anyone exploiting this bug yet, although the company assigned it the label “exploitation more likely,” meaning it may not be difficult for attackers to figure out. CVE-2021-26424 could be exploited by sending a single malicious data packet to a vulnerable system.

On that note, before you update please make sure you have backed up your system and/or important files. It’s not uncommon for a Windows update package to hose one’s system or prevent it from booting properly, and some updates have been known to erase or corrupt files.

So do yourself a favor and backup before installing any patches. Windows 10 even has some built-in tools to help you do that, either on a per-file/folder basis or by making a complete and bootable copy of your hard drive all at once.

Business Results and Better Security with MVISION Cloud for Microsoft Dynamics 365

Every organization has data moving to the multi-cloud; digital transformation is occurring rapidly, is here to stay, and is impacting every major industry.  Organizations are working hard to adopt Zero Trust architectures as their critical information, trade secrets, and business applications are no longer stored in a single datacenter or location. Architecture:

McAfee Enterprise’s open architectural methodology emphasizes the efficiencies that cloud adoption and open frameworks can offer.  The ability to leverage agile development and continuously adapt to dynamic mission requirements – faster than our adversaries – is a strategic advantage.  Data protection and cloud posture, however, must not take a back seat to innovation.

Vulnerabilities leave the environment exposed as DevOps tends to leverage open-source tools and capabilities.  Agile development introduces a lot of moving parts as applications are updated and changed at an expedited pace and based on shorter, prescriptive measures. Customers also utilize multiple cloud service providers (CSP) to fit their mission needs, so consistent and uniform data management across all the multi-cloud services is a necessity.  We are at a pivotal inflection point where native, built-in CSP protections have introduced too much complexity, overhead, and inconsistency. Our data security solution is a holistic, open platform that enforces standardized protections and visibility across the multi-cloud.

Together with our partners, we support the architecture requirements for data-centric organizations and take charge as the multi-cloud scales.  Several items – visibility and control over the multi-cloud, device-to-cloud data protection, cloud posture, user behavior and insider threat – play into our strengths while organic partner integrations (e.g., ZTNA) further bolster the Zero Trust narrative and contribute to interoperability requirements.  We are better together and can facilitate an open architecture to meet the demands of the mission.

Standards:

DoD requires proven-at-scale methods for managing, representing, and sharing data of all types, and an open architecture should be used wherever possible to avoid stovepiped solutions and facilitate an interoperable security ecosystem.  Past performance is key, and McAfee Enterprise has a long track record of delivering results, which is crucial as the DoD moves into a hybrid model of management.

Data comes in many forms, and the growth of telemetry architectures requires machines to do more with artificial intelligence and machine learning to make sense of data.  How do we share indicators of compromise (IoCs) so multiple environments – internal and external – can leverage intelligence from other organizations?  How do we share risks in multi-clouds and ensure data is secured in a uniform manner?  How do we weaponize intelligence to shift “left of boom” and eliminate those post-compromise autopsies?  Let’s explore how McAfee Enterprise supports data standards.

Governance:

Granular governance and control – application-level visibility – by authenticated users working within the various cloud services is just as important as controlling access to them.  Tight API integrations with traditional SaaS services guarantee only permitted activities occur.  With agile development on the rise, it is just as important that the solution is flexible to control these custom apps in the same way as any commercial cloud service.  Legacy mission applications are being redesigned to take advantage of cloud scale and efficiency; McAfee Enterprise will not impose limits.

Governance over cloud posture is equally important, and customers need to ensure the multi-cloud environment is not introducing any additional source of risk.  Most compromises are due to misconfigurations or mistakes that leave links, portals, or directories open to the public.  We evaluate the multi-cloud against industry benchmarks and best practices, provide holistic risk scoring, and provide the means to remediate these findings to fortify an organization’s cloud infrastructure.

New Android Trojan Hijacks Social Media

New Android Trojan Hijacks Social Media

Researchers have uncovered a new type of Android Trojan attack that spreads via social media hijacking. 

Evidence of the malware was dug up by the zLabs team at mobile security company Zimperium. A forensic investigation revealed the malicious software to be part of a family of Trojans that use social engineering to compromise Facebook accounts.

Zimperium’s Aazim Yaswant said: “A new Android Trojan codenamed FlyTrap has hit at least 140 countries since March 2021 and has spread to over 10,000 victims through social media hijacking, third-party app stores, and sideloaded applications.”

The malware places victims at risk of identity theft by hijacking their social media accounts via a Trojan infecting their Android device. Data stolen by FlyTrap includes Facebook ID, location, email address, IP address, and cookies and tokens associated with the Facebook account.

“These hijacked Facebook sessions can be used to spread the malware by abusing the victim’s social credibility through personal messaging with links to the Trojan, as well as propagating propaganda or disinformation campaigns using the victim’s geolocation details,” said Yaswant.

FlyTrap ensnares social media users by pretending to offer discount codes for Netflix and Google AdWords or asking users to vote for their favorite soccer team. Users are then taken to a fake Facebook login page and asked to enter their credentials. 

The Trojan works by opening the genuine URL inside a WebView configured with the ability to inject JavaScript code. It then steals all the necessary information such as the user’s account details and IP address by injecting malicious JS code.

Threat actors based in Vietnam are believed to have been running this session hijacking campaign since springtime.  

The threat researchers found that the malicious applications were first distributed through both Google Play and third-party application stores. 

“Zimperium zLabs reported the findings to Google, who verified the provided research and removed the malicious applications from the Google Play store. However, the malicious applications are still available on third-party, unsecured app repositories, highlighting the risk of sideloaded applications to mobile endpoints and user data,” said Yaswant.

Martial Arts Instructor Accused of Spying on Students

Martial Arts Instructor Accused of Spying on Students

The owner of a martial arts academy in Florida is in custody after allegedly installing hidden cameras in the restroom to spy on students. 

Police in Broward County arrested 64-year-old martial arts instructor Robert Danilo Franco on Friday. An investigation was launched after a 17-year-old female student spotted the devices and tipped off police.

Investigators said the student discovered two cameras hidden inside picture frames that were placed on a shelf in the bathroom at Master Franco’s Taekwondo Academy on Pines Boulevard, Miami.

After photographing the cameras, the student confronted Franco, who then allegedly destroyed the frames and cameras. The student then walked out of the academy and called her father, who came to meet her and called the police. 

Franco surrendered himself to the Broward County Jail on August 6 after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Local10 news reported that a search of the martial arts instructor’s phone and computer by law enforcement revealed content featuring children and adults. 

Authorities think Franco may have been filming people without their consent since March 2021 when he took over the martial arts academy.

Pembroke Pines Police reportedly said that Franco provided them with an explanation regarding the presence of the cameras in the bathroom, but officers did not deem the explanation to be plausible. 

“The Pembroke Pines Police Department fully anticipates more victims to come forward,” said Captain Adam Feiner with Pembroke Pines PD. “We haven’t identified them yet and need the community’s help to do so.”

The police are asking anyone who used the restroom at Master Franco’s Taekwondo Academy, or whose children attended or visited the academy and used the bathroom, to contact Detective Jacob Childress at the Special Victims Unit at 954-743-1637.

Franco was charged with three counts of video voyeurism and one count of tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. His bond was set at $20,000.

A media release by the Pembroke Pines PD praised the actions of the teenager who allegedly discovered the cameras.

“The courageous actions of the juvenile student led to a thorough examination of all aspects of this investigation, the seizure of evidence, and ultimately an arrest warrant,” read the statement

A new poll has revealed that American and British adults would be put off using a virtual vaccination card by the fear that their personal data may not be protected. 

Cybersecurity company Anomali teamed up with The Harris Poll to question more than 2,000 Americans and 1,000 Brits aged over 18 on how they would feel about using COVID-19 digital vaccine cards, should they become a requirement for participating in activities like traveling, in-person learning, attending sporting events, and entering a store or government building.

While nearly all the adults surveyed (93% in the US and 89% in the UK) had smartphones capable of supporting digital vaccination cards, only around three quarters of respondents said they would be likely to use them. 

Brits were more enthusiastic than Americans, with 54% saying their adoption of such a card was “very likely” and 26% stating that it was “somewhat likely” compared with 45% and 23% of Americans, respectively. 

Among Americans, 20% said they were not at all likely to use a digital vaccination card, compared with 12% of adults in the UK. 

Parents were more likely to sign up for virtual vaccination cards, with 73% of US parents and 83% of British parents giving the possibility a thumbs up. Another group with a higher than average likelihood of using the cards was the affluent, with 85% of Brits earning over £30,000 and 78% of Americans taking home more than $100K pledging their approval. 

The poll found that more than three quarters (80% of Americans and 76% of those in the UK) of respondents had cybersecurity concerns over using the cards. The main worry cited by both nationalities was identity theft, but respondents were also troubled by the possibility of a data breach.

The polled listed their third biggest cybersecurity concern as the worry that threat actors might be able to break into smartphones using fake digital vaccination cards.

Describing who they thought might carry out a cyberattack related to COVID-19 digital vaccination cards, Americans most frequently choose nation-states, including Russia, China, or North Korea (36%), while Brits pointed the finger at organized cybercriminal gangs (42%).

Around half of businesses (45.49%) and consumers (52.35%) on average saw at least one sustained additional infection in May 2021, according to the latest metrics from Webroot Brightcloud Mid Year Threat Report.

In May 2021, the report revealed a 440% increase in phishing, holding the record for the single largest phishing spike in a single month. It also showed that industries such as oil, gas and mining saw a 47% increase in the same six-month period, with manufacturing and wholesale traders seeing a 32% increase.  

The report extends its yearly threat intelligence report, with updated metrics between January 1 and June 30 2021. It also investigates the latest trends in malware, phishing and crypto exchanges.

The Mid Year Threat Report found that big brands continued to suffer from cyber extortion and ransomware. PayPal accounted for 1% of the top 200 phished brands but saw a 1,834% spike in May — showing that financial institutions are a top target.

Webroot Brightcloud also found that technology supply chains were under attack. The management of companies and the enterprise industry showed a significant increase in malware infections — 57% versus the global average.

“People aren’t learning from their cyber mistakes, and more concerning, they aren’t equipped with knowledge on how to prevent repeat mistakes,” says Grayson Milbourne, security intelligence director at Webroot. “Organizations must take ownership of the issue and do all they can in leading their people to improve security awareness, knowledge and habits.”

The report also found that phishing attacks are increasingly targeting crypto exchanges and wallets. Observations by Webroot found that there was a 75% increase in Coinbase phishing pages using HTTPS immediately after Coinbase’s IPO.

It also found that crytojacking also remained active, but had declined since March 2020, says the report. This was due to the end of several crypto mining operations such as Minr, XMROmine and JSECoin. Webroot also found that cryptojacking activity saw a decline of 39% by the end of June 2021.

“Cryptocurrency is like leaving behind digital breadcrumbs on blockchain, and while cryptojacking in the browser is dead, crypto mining using applications is still very profitable and might yield a higher reward over time than a ransomware demand,” explains David Dufour, vice president of engineering at Webroot.

Average Ransomware Demands Surge by 518% in 2021

Average ransomware demands surged by 518% in the first half of 2021 compared to 2020, while payments climbed by 82% in the same period, according to new figures released by the Unit 42 security consulting group.

The researchers revealed that the average demand from ransomware gangs in H1 2021 was $50m, representing a massive increase from $847,000 in 2020. They noted that the highest demand made of a single victim so far in 2021 was $50m, which compares to $30m last year.

In addition, the average ransomware payment this year was a record $570,000, which compares to $312,000 last year. The team also noted that the average payment in 2020 was 171% higher than in 2019, further highlighting how lucrative this tactic has become during the past 18 months.

According to the researchers, the main factor in these increases was the use of new extortion approaches, meaning ransomware gangs are getting “greedier.” This included the rise of “quadruple extortion,” in which four extortion methods are used against a single victim:

  • Encryption: making organizations pay to regain access to locked data and systems
  • Data theft: threatening to release sensitive data if a ransom is not paid
  • Denial of service (DoS): shutting down a victim’s public website
  • Harassment: contacting customers, business partners, employees and media to tell them the organization has been compromised

The Unit 42 team also stated that they expect the ransomware crisis to worsen over the coming months and have observed threat actors “develop new approaches for making attacks more disruptive.” This includes encrypting hypervisors, which can corrupt multiple virtual instances running on a single server.

They also predict that managed service providers will be increasingly targeted in the wake of the recent high-profile Kaseya attack.

The researchers added: “While we predict that ransoms will continue their upward trajectory, we do expect to see some gangs continue to focus on the low end of the market, regularly targeting small businesses that lack resources to invest heavily in cybersecurity. So far this year, we have observed groups, including NetWalker, SunCrypt and Lockbit, demanding and taking in payments ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. While they may seem small compared to the largest ransoms we observed, payments that size can have a debilitating impact on a small organization.”

The findings have followed numerous instances of large ransomware payments in recent months. In May, it was reported that insurance giant CNA Financial paid its extorters $40m after its IT systems were locked down and data were stolen, while meat processing firm JBS confirmed it paid the REvil ransomware gang $11m in June.
